Community Safety & Wellbeing Dashboard

Developed in collaboration with ACT NOW and seven pilot sites across the country, our Community Safety & Wellbeing Dashboard visualizes more than 40 indicators of community health, informed by direct input from community-based organizations. The dashboard maps data at the state, county, census tract, and census block levels, enabling multi-level comparisons and providing granular insights into the areas most in need of support—as well as the type of support they need. It also highlights the unique ways some communities are thriving, offering opportunities to learn from their success and strengthen resilience one variable at a time.
Interactive Network Visualization of MPD Co-Complaint Data

Recent research on policing suggests that some officer behaviors, such as misconduct and use of force, can be described as social phenomena. Rather than being one-off events attributed to individual dispositions or situational factors, these behaviors often reflect peer and organizational dynamics. This interactive visualizer created by QSIDE’s Data Science, Police Accountability, and Community Engagement (DSPACE) Group helps uncover and quantify the effects of these dynamics, using data from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD).

Opportunity Youth Dashboard

“Opportunity Youth” refers broadly to disconnected, foster care, and justice-impacted youth who often lack the support and resources every child needs to grow and thrive. In conversations with community service providers, a common challenge emerged: a lack of clear data on where these resources are most needed and how many Opportunity Youth live in those areas. Through our DATA2LIFT Initiative, QSIDE used data science to help address this gap and connect service providers with the communities most in need. The result is the Opportunity Youth Dashboard—a tool that synthesizes data across four major categories of Opportunity Youth and creates a national index to guide resource allocation and support.

Youth Development and Deflection Savings and Return on Investment Calculator (in BETA)

In conversations with community organizations and activists working in diversion and deflection programs, a common concern emerged: funders and government entities—local to federal—often overlook the true societal cost of incarceration. While they may account for the operational costs of jails and prisons, they frequently ignore the broader and long-term impacts on individuals, families, and communities. At the same time, the significant social and financial benefits of deflection programs are often undervalued, despite their potential to improve community health and generate long-term savings. As part of our DATA2LIFT initiative, QSIDE, in partnership with Minneapolis-based research organization InsightWorks, developed a groundbreaking interactive data tool to address this gap. The tool helps organizations calculate the return on investment (ROI) for programs aimed at breaking intergenerational cycles of incarceration—particularly in Black and Brown communities. It also supports data-driven program design for Opportunity Youth, further strengthening efforts to disrupt the cycle of incarceration.
The Youth Development and Deflection Savings and Return on Investment Calculator is currently in BETA, but we hope to launch soon for use by the general public. If you are interested in using this tool now, or helping fund or partner with us to achieve its ultimate completion, please contact our Director of Operations, Tyrone Bass, at tyrone.bass@qsideinstitute.org.
