Carlos Roberto Gonzalez
QSIDE Research Fellow, Fall 2024
Carlos Roberto Gonzalez is a recent graduate in Mathematics and Economics from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. His diverse experiences have been shaped by the opportunity of studying and living in El Salvador, China, Australia, and the United States. Since then, Carlos has developed a strong passion for combining quantitative methods with community-focused work. As an alumnus of the University of Virginia Data Justice Academy, he contributed to projects exploring the intersection of technology and community safety. Recently, Carlos was honored with the Stangle Family Award for his economics thesis, which used nighttime light data to assess the impact of security policies in 2015 El Salvador. Outside of work, Carlos enjoys jogging, SCUBA diving, and cooking.

Sydney Woods

I’m Sydney Woods, a passionate advocate for social justice and service, with a strong commitment to making a positive impact through the intersection of data science. Currently a third-year data science major at Michigan State University, I’ve been actively involved in campus initiatives that promote social change. Thrilled to continue this meaningful work, I’m dedicated to leveraging data-driven insights to address socio-economic challenges and drive sustainable progress.

David Antwi

David Antwi is currently a junior pursuing degrees in Computer Science at Morgan State University (MSU) and a member of the Machine Intelligence and Data Science (Lab) at MSU. David has a keen interest in the exciting world of Data Science. He has expertise in research and development generating insightful insights and reasoned decisions. With a focus on machine learning and predictive analytics, David is excited to contribute to the Data Science community.

Dammy Ogunjimi

Oluwadamilola (Dammy) Ogunjimi is a graduating senior pursuing degrees in Computer Science and Cloud Engineering at Morgan State University (MSU). Dammy is a Google Tech Scholar and a member of the Machine Intelligence and Data Science (Lab) at MSU.As a junior data scientist and tech developer, she has expertise in cutting-edge projects. With a background in machine learning research, practical and hands-on experience in development, transformation, and implementation Dammy has extensive collaborations with both faculty and external researchers, particularly in regards to data science, data analysis, statistical modeling, and programming.

Teddy Oweh

Ifechukwudeni Teddy Oweh is a computer science and mathematics major at Morgan State University with a focus in artificial intelligence and deep learning. With a stellar academic record and a slew of awards, Teddy has garnered extensive experience through internships at tech giants like Apple Inc as an AI/ML Engineering Intern. and cutting-edge research projects at institutions like NASA. Also 3 academia research projects alongside faculty all in the machine learning & deep learning domain. Teddy’s expertise spans across various technologies and domains, from developing ML systems, data science & analysis, building web and mobile applications to low level system and hardware engineering . Teddy’s innovative projects demonstrate a keen understanding of complex systems and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology.

Madhurya Shankar
QSIDE Research Fellow, Summer 2024
Madhurya Shankar is pursuing a master’s degree in Data Science at Michigan State University. She holds a Bachelor’s in Information Science Engineering, where she graduated as a gold medalist. At MSU, she works as a Research Assistant, developing predictive modeling for student success and leading the creation of a standardized database for biosensor experimental results. Madhurya has experience as a Software Engineer at OpenText, where she focused on cloud cost management and API development. Her skills include Python, Java, SQL, AWS, and Docker. Madhurya has demonstrated expertise in data visualization, creating informative figures for publication, and aims to use data science to address social justice issues, contributing to the QSIDE Institute’s mission.

QSIDE Research Fellow, Summer 2024
Sandhya Kilari is a Master of Science graduate student in Data Science at Michigan State University, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. As a Student Research Assistant at Henry Ford Health + MSU Health Sciences, she focuses on leveraging machine learning for cancer patient outcomes by predicting health utilization, cleaning and preprocessing data, analyzing missing data, and training risk prediction models. Previously, at Accenture Solutions, she led data integration initiatives, managing migrations and system upgrades with SQL Server, .NET Core MVC, and Azure DevOps to enhance application performance. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, predictive modeling, and statistical analysis. She is passionate about applying data science to solve complex, real-world problems.

Natalie Fieberg

Natalie Fieberg (she/her) is a first-year Data Analytics major at Denison University. She took a gap year before college where she worked on sustainability and environmental projects in Hawai’i. She plays club rugby and club soccer at Denison. Natalie is excited to intern with QSIDE to address social justice issues throughout the country.

Fatma Mahmoud
QSIDE Research Fellow, Summer 2024
Fatma Mahmoud (she/her), originally from Egypt, is currently an undergraduate student at Kenyon College, pursuing a double major in Economics and Applied Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science. Driven by a strong desire to empower underrepresented communities, Fatma actively takes on leadership roles on campus to foster inclusivity and social change. Serving as the president of the Muslim Student Association and the vice president of the Kenyon Students for Justice in Palestine organization, she works to amplify the voices of marginalized students. Fatma’s academic passion is evident through her involvement in research projects, spanning Economics and Mathematics. Last summer, she delved into labor economics at the Chicago Booth School of Business, while in summer 2022, she explored Coding Theory at Kenyon College’s Mathematics and Statistics Department. Furthermore, Fatma was selected to present her findings from the coding theory research at the Joint Mathematics Meeting (JMM) in Massachusetts in 2023. Outside of academics and leadership, Fatma enjoys spending her free time traveling, reading, and cooking.

Haleemah Atobiloye (she/her/hers) is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in International Development with a concentration in International Political Economy at Ohio University. Haleemah believes that diversity in all its forms is an integral part of humanity and should be treated with such importance. Haleemah brings this belief and her technical ability to conduct mixed-method social (science) research to her Research Fellow position at QSIDE.

Tyrone Bass

Tyrone Bass (he/him/his) is a rising senior at Bennington College, where he is majoring in Human Geography and Music Studies. He is currently writing his thesis on sound’s function in maintaining white supremacist space, and how an epistomological change to our listening practices might resist the invisible sonic politics of race in the US. Tyrone is excited to work with QSIDE to bring about positive change through a collaborative research paradigm, and find ways to use what he has learned to the goal of creating a more equitable future.

Gayathri Kaimal

Gayathri Kaimal (She/her/hers) is currently a junior at Wilton High School. Gayathri believes diversity and equity can only be achieved through transparency. Her passion for math and social equity inspires her to pursue an interdisciplinary approach to fighting injustice. Gayathri is eager to continue her work with QSIDE and keep supporting research that shines a light on discrimination and inequity.

Soha Kawtharani
QSIDE Development Fellow, Spring 2022
Soha (she/her/hers) recently graduated from Hamilton College with a major in mathematics and minor in psychology. As a junior, she did an independent psychology research project on resilience in Syrian refugee children in relation to Syrian parenting styles, parenting stressors resulting from war and displacement, and religion. Doing data analysis for that project opened her eyes to the power of data science and how essential of a tool it is in how we can scientifically approach social justice issues. She’s very excited to join QSIDE and learn more about how to use data science to further social justice causes!

N’Kira Hailey

N’Kira Hailey (she/her/hers) is a sophomore at Bard College, intending to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Film Production. Her intentions with having a joint major is to bring more awareness and discourse for underrepresented children through the compilation of clinical studies and interactive media. The work she has created was focused on her intersectionalities as she experiences college and learning different researching techniques that can strengthen a research study. She is recently focused on creating a more inclusive environment for the spaces she encompasses and hopes that with the new work opportunity at QSIDE, she is able to conquer that challenge.

Andrew Lopez

Andrew Lopez (he/him/his) is a senior at Swarthmore College pursuing an honors major in Education and honors minor in Gender & Sexuality studies. With a passion for educational equity, Andrew has worked on research focusing on issues facing disadvantaged student populations, especially queer students of color, within schools in the United States. He believes that educational institutions serve a vital function in society as establishments that can either perpetuate or abolish prejudice, ignorance, and division. Andrew is excited to work with QSIDE and further support social justice efforts through quantitative research. In his free time, Andrew enjoys kayaking along the coast of his home state of California.

Ethan Siau

Ethan Siau (he/him/his) is a senior majoring in Music and Economics at Northwestern University. He intends to leverage his experiences from this position to contribute to a more diverse and equitable workspace as he pursues a career in business and finance. Xian (Elaine) Ye

Xian (Elaine) Ye (she/her/hers) graduated from Smith College in May 2021, where she majored in Psychology and Statistical & Data Sciences. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Health Data Science at Harvard School of Public Health. Her research interests include using data science methods to study mental health and psychosocial factors of health. She cares about algorithm fairness and is committed to practicing ethical data analysis that does not reproduce systemic oppression. Elaine is excited to work with QSIDE and collaborate with both scholars and activists for social justice causes.

Evan Moon

Evan Moon (he/they) is a recent graduate of Haverford College, where he majored in Political Science. Evan’s research interest and experience revolve around international law and policy, human rights, restorative justice, and political philosophy. He wrote a senior thesis on the Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) and its critique and reform on international human rights law, which was awarded with Honors. Evan hopes to both pursue and learn more about research, development, and programming for social justice causes at QSIDE.

Phebe Chen (she/her/hers) is a rising Sophomore at Macalester College pursuing a double major in Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Economics. With her strong interest in Mathematics and Data Science, she is excited to work with QSIDE as a Social Media Management Fellow, to create awareness on topics of social justice. Outside of the classroom, Phebe enjoys playing golf for Macalester College.

Celina Einem
QSIDE Fellow, Summer 2021
Celina Einem (she/they) is a rising Senior at Bennington College studying music composition, sound design, and sociology. They have a passion for working-class studies, cultural sociology, and audio storytelling. Along with their work at QSIDE, Celina is currently finishing a solo album, beginning work on a multidisciplinary auditory thesis exploring the political and ethical outlooks of working-class and low-income members of Generation Z in the United States, and working as a Music Development intern at A24. She is excited to help illuminate institutional bias in order to work towards a more equitable future, and to help make educational resources on data science for social justice accessible to the public through her work with QSIDE!

Sophie Rubenfeld (she/her/hers) is a rising Junior at Hamilton College, where she is majoring in Public Policy and Mathematics. With a passion for social justice and a strong interest in quantitative policy analysis and advocacy, she is excited to work with QSIDE in developing the Communities of Practice Program this summer. When not in the classroom, Sophie is active in her local Jewish community and enjoys skiing for the Hamilton College Alpine Ski Team!

Owen Koppe

Owen Koppe (he/him/his) is an incoming Freshman at the University of Utah, where he plans to double major in Applied Mathematics and Economics. Charlotte Beckford

Charlotte Beckford (she/her) is a senior at Fordham University double majoring in Applied Mathematics and Spanish Language and Literature. As a lover of math, Charlotte believes in the strength of numbers, and as such knows that data is a powerful tool that can be utilized to expose systemic injustices in our society. While her previous research experiences have been limited to applying mathematics to answer ecological questions, she hopes that her experience with QSIDE will expose her to new ways she can use her academic interests to promote issues of social justice.

Emily Byers

Emily Byers (she/her/hers) is currently on a gap year before starting at Amherst College this Fall. Thus far, she has spent her interim year strengthening her Spanish language skills in Madrid, Spain while also tutoring children in English as a second language. Serving as the QSIDE Event Planning Fellow, Emily is excited to contribute to creating spaces for meaningful discussion amongst researchers, activists, and students alike.

Daniela Galvez-Cepeda

Daniela Galvez-Cepeda (she/her/hers) is a first-year at Williams College where she is planning on pursuing a degree in mathematics, and neuroscience or theater, while on the pre-med track. Apart from publishing a variety of papers through the National Collegiate Journal of Science and tutoring disadvantaged NYC students, she volunteers at QSIDE as its Social Media Management Fellow where she grows QSIDE’s social media presence in hopes to elevate meaningful conversations that promote equality in all different sectors.

Cecilia Gao

Cecilia Gao (she/they) is a sophomore at UC Berkeley studying Cognitive Science and Linguistics. As its Affiliate Management and Communications Fellow, she hopes to amplify awareness of QSIDE’s mission and programming across academic spaces and other communities. Personally, Cecilia is most interested in exploring issues of educational equity, sociolinguistics, and gender equity. Her greatest sources of joy are well-planned systems of public transit and handwritten letters.

Eric Young is a former professional cyclist currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics with a focus in Statistics and Data Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He believes strongly in the power and need of education, knowledge, and information to improve the world we live in. As a Research Fellow with QSIDE, Eric hopes to create, promote, and learn from accurate information which can support dialogue and growth in the areas of equity and equality.

Kendall Clark

Kendall Clark is a sophomore at Northwestern University, studying under the Brady Scholars Program of Ethics and Civic Life. With a background in mathematical research and a passion for social justice, she is one of QSIDE’s Data Analysis, Visualization, and Storytelling interns. Throughout her high school career at the Park School of Baltimore, she dedicated her time to organizing outings as co-captain of the Community Service team, as well as leading discussions and developing workshops for the school’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. For the past seven months, Kendall has served as the president of Northwestern’s Humanities Residential College at Chapin Hall. She seeks to cultivate inclusion and community in each of her pursuits— this, combined with her analytical outlook, is what led her to QSIDE.

Mackenzie McIntyre
QSIDE Fellow, Fall 2020
Mackenzie McIntyre (she, her, hers) comes to QSIDE as the Data Storytelling & Visualization intern. She is a budding journalist, a passionate activist, and a trained scientist. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2016 with degrees in International Human Rights and Environment Sustainability Science. Before pursuing her MPH at the Boston University School of Public Health, she traveled for two years as a Bonderman Fellow, exploring the impact of globalization on health equity, cultural imperialism, and community identity. She has partnered with organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Boston Housing Authority, and Supreme Sanitary Pads, Malawi. Currently, she is working with the COVID Response Corps to create a predictive model for COVID-19 vaccine distribution in prisons, jails, and ICE detention centers.

Shivani Mendiratta

Shivani Mendiratta is a freshman at Brown University pursuing a degree in Applied Mathematics. She is a Data Analysis intern on the QSIDE Research team. Shivani is passionate about using statistics to further social action and growth. Specifically, her interests lie in the use of mathematics to solve questions of genetics, bias, and neurodivergence. In her free time, Shivani enjoys playing music and cooking.

Kendra Brenya is a rising Junior at Williams College. As a political science major concentrating in race and gender, she aims to pursue a career that uses political activism and public policy to create progressive change for marginalized groups while educating society on pressing issues. Kendra aims to execute her Media Management Intern position by spreading the organization’s mission through means of modern communication.

Thomas Callahan is a Junior at Swarthmore College where he is working on a bachelor of arts degree while majoring in religion and interpretation theory. Thomas is active in campus organizing, protesting, and political action as well as student government. With a broad history in operational and institutional organization, Thomas is working with QSIDE as an Organizational Infrastructure and Bylaws Intern.

Deven Desai

Deven Desai is a Rising Junior at Williams College, double majoring in Economics and Political Science. He is especially interested in education policy and provides college counseling to high schoolers. For fun he enjoys rock climbing and cooking. Deven is working with QSIDE as an intern for Professor Jacobson looking at imbalances of gender in music.

Ethan Dincer is a rising Sophomore at Williams College pursuing a double major in American Studies and Political Science. Ethan has a deep interest and involvement in campus activism, photojournalism, and DEI-related organizations and committees. With expertise in community building, Ethan joins QSIDE as the Affiliate Program Engagement Intern. For fun, he enjoys reading about Middle Eastern activism and playing the bassoon.

Shenise Duboulay is a recent graduate of Hamilton College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics with a minor in Africana Studies. Her interest in mathematics has always extended beyond the classroom as she yearned for applied mathematical courses that would allow her to apply her learning to real-world problems. She intends to use the skills that she has developed at Hamilton, along with her passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion to address issues within both her local (NYC) and work community while fostering compassion, patience, and empathy. As a QSIDE intern, she hopes to bring a new and diverse perspective into the workplace, as well as respecting ones that differ from her own, in an effort to make PASS’20 findings accessible for all.

Sarah Edelson is a rising sophomore at Amherst College, where she is double majoring in Economics and Architectural Studies. She can be found playing field hockey, performing with her jazz combo, and flying her drone. She is excited about utilizing data to unearth inequities. With an interest in digital media, Sarah is working with QSIDE as the Promotional Material and Collateral Development Intern.

Diego Esparza

Diego Esparza is a rising Junior at Williams College, with plans to major in Statistics and possibly Computer Science. He wants to combine the lessons and skills learned in his STEM and humanities courses in college, using data to emphasize and address social inequalities. He is also interested in addressing equal access to education and in developing his Spanish. Diego is joining QSIDE this summer as a data analyst intern.

In the future, she intends on pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant and working to reform inequitable healthcare systems. She decided to join QSIDE because, coming from a diverse low income community, she is passionate in being involved in projects that magnify the injustices in American society and facilitate active dialogue.

Harper Kerkhoff

Harper Kerkhoff is part of the Williams College Class of 2020, where she completed a double major in Mathematics and Political Science. She intends to use these skills to pursue a career targeting the institutionalized racism of the prison industrial complex. Harper is working at QSIDE as a research intern, studying diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts.

Josef Komissar is a rising Junior at Hamilton College where he is majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. While still figuring out what he wants to do for a career, he is excited to be able to apply what he is learning to work toward positive change in the world. Eli Miller is a rising senior at Williams College, pursuing a double major in English and Mathematics. This summer, Eli is researching data related to inequity and injustice in New York City’s criminal justice system. He also loves to play cello, watch baseball, and throw frisbees.

Daniel Rials

Daniel Rials is a rising Junior at Williams college where he is pursuing a double major in Economics and Psychology. On campus, Daniel is involved with WCFM radio, and he serves as an Economics TA and a tour guide. Daniel is interested in the overlap of Econ and Psych, specifically decision making and rational choice, as well as race economics and the disparity of economic outcomes. He is looking forward to bringing this curiosity to his research position this summer.

Julia Tucher

Julia Tucher is a part of the Williams College Class of 2021, originally from Oakland, CA. She is pursuing a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics, including research on implementing early CS education and creating a predictive model for affirmative action policies. This summer she is excited to join QSIDE as she begins research for her honors thesis on diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.

Alvin Zhou

Alvin Zhou is the Strategic Crowd-sourced Fundraising Intern with the QSIDE institute. He is responsible for the development of a database of affiliated individuals and organizations on social media to target for inclusion in specific campaigns, both for crowd-funding and for audience amplification. He is currently studying Government at Hamilton College, NY. He loves exploring issues on public policy and diplomacy.
